The Graduate Institute of Linguistics, National Tsing Hua University was founded in 1986,
and now it has a MA program and a Ph.D. program in linguistics. (Undergraduate major is
not offered.) The fields covered and courses provided include theoretical linguistics
(syntax, phonology, semantics), Chinese dialects, historical Chinese grammar, Austronesian
languages, articulatory and experimental phonetic/phonology, psycho- and neurolinguistics,
functional and cognitive grammatical studies, and others.
Currently Tsing Hua Linguistics has 10 faculty members (7 professors and 3 assistant
professors), and more than 60 graduate students. The facilities and equipments of Tsing Hua
Linguistics include:
- a rich collection of linguistic books and journals
(School of Humanities and Social Sciences Library)
- a phonetic laboratory
- a neuro- and psycholinguistic laboratory
- a computer laboratory
- student offices for study and meeting
As an outstanding linguistic institute, Tsing Hua Linguistics has hosted a number of
academic conferences:
Right now the chair of the institute is Professor Yueh-chin Chang, and the institute manager is
